Congratulations! You’ve either booked your flights to Lisbon, or you’re in the planning stage, and now you need to know how to get from Lisbon to Lagos.
Best Ways To Get From Lisbon to Lagos
You have 3 options for your trip from Lisbon to Lagos on the Algarve:
1. Car – about 3 hours by the most direct route
2. Train – takes 4.5 hours with a change of trains at Tunes
3. Bus – 3.5 to 4 hours.
Note: Flying from Lisbon to Faro and organizing transfers to Lagos is not worth the effort in terms of time or expense.
1. Car
If you hire a car, the journey to Lagos via the A12, A2, and A22 will take approximately 3 hours.
These motorways are toll roads. The total cost for this trip is €24.85. If you decide to take a different route, you can use this toll calculator to calculate your trip.
Hire cars will have a toll payment device (be sure to ask about this as you do not want to be in a situation where, sometime down the track, you’ve incurred a large bill + fees).
If you drive your own vehicle and don’t have a toll payment device, you really should get one. Via Verde is the local toll operator. However, if you are also planning to travel in Spain, France, or Italy, Bip n Go is a good option.
This is the fastest route, but if you have time and want to see more of the country, take the alternate route down the Atlantic coast, taking in the towns of Sines, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Odeceixe, and Aljezur.
While scenic, the road isn’t the best; you’ll need to take care and watch for signs, but it’s worth it.
2. Bus
The cheapest option to travel from Lisbon to Lagos is by bus. Bus tickets are from as little as €4.50 – the average bus ticket price is around €13.00
2 bus lines are operating daily services. Rede Expresos and Flixbus. Both have buses departing from Lisbon Oriente and Sete Rios bus stations.
The bus station at Lagos is centrally located in the old town (right next door to the Levante Farmers Market – Mercado de Levante)
3. Train
There is no direct train to Lagos from Lisbon. You will need to change trains at Tunes. This will be quite a shock as the train from Lisbon to Tunes is very comfortable, while the train from Tunes to Lagos is fondly referred to by expats living here as the sh*t box, a two-carriage, ancient train stopping at all stations. On the up-side, it does allow you to see more of the countryside.
The total travel time from Lisbon to Lagos by train is about 4.5 hours, and ticket prices are from €19 to €28
The Lagos Train Station is located near Lagos Marina. Catch a taxi, Uber, or Bolt to your accommodation and enjoy your stay in Lagos!
If you’re coming from Faro Airport, here are your options.
