Day Trip To Sagres

Cabo de Sao Vincente

A day trip from Lagos to Sagres and the most southwest point of Europe, Cabo de Sao Vincente, is a must do for anyone enjoying Lagos and it’s wonderful surrounds.

Reasons to Visit Sagres

Sagres, Portugal is a must-see destination that offers a unique blend of historical significance, natural beauty, and cultural richness. Here are several compelling reasons to consider visiting Sagres:

  1. Natural Beauty and Beaches: Sagres is renowned for its stunning landscapes and pristine beaches. It’s a perfect spot for those who appreciate the outdoors, with dramatic cliffs, clear waters, and sandy shores. Popular beaches like Praia do Martinhal and Praia do Beliche attract surfers, sunbathers, and nature lovers.
  2. Surfing Haven: The Atlantic swells make Sagres one of the best surfing destinations in Europe. Both beginners and experienced surfers can find something to suit their skills, and there are numerous surf schools offering lessons and equipment rentals.
  3. Historical Significance: Sagres is steeped in history, closely associated with Prince Henry the Navigator and the Age of Discoveries. The Fortaleza de Sagres, a fortress originally built in the 15th century, offers insights into Portugal’s maritime past and provides panoramic views of the coastline.
  4. Cape St. Vincent (Cabo de São Vicente): This is the southwestern most point of continental Europe, known as the “end of the world” in ancient times. The cape is a stunning place to watch dramatic sunsets and its lighthouse is one of the most powerful in Europe.
  5. Tranquil Environment: Unlike some of the more crowded tourist destinations in the Algarve, Sagres offers a more relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. It’s an ideal place for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a more serene holiday experience.
  6. Cultural Experiences: Sagres has a rich cultural scene, with local restaurants serving traditional Portuguese seafood dishes, markets selling local crafts, and festivals that celebrate the region’s history and culture.
  7. Walking and Cycling Routes: The area around Sagres is crisscrossed with numerous walking and cycling trails that allow visitors to explore the natural scenery at their own pace. These paths offer breathtaking views and connect various points of interest throughout the region.
  8. Bird Watching: The coastal cliffs around Sagres are excellent for bird watching, particularly during migration periods when various species of seabirds can be observed.

Car or Public Transport?

Sagres isn’t served by train, so bus is your only option. More on that in a bit…
To get the most out of a day trip to Sagres, I recommended going by car.

When we settled in Lagos in 2019 one of the first places we wanted to explore outside of Lagos was Sagres. Not having bought a car at that time we decided to take the bus. Well that was an adventure in itself! We were dropped off outside the tourist office and decided to see the town first and then the fortress. Big mistake! By the end of the day we had walked the length of the main road, explored the fisherman’s harbour, had lunch and then walked back to explore the Fortaleza, we were exhausted. We missed out on Cabo de Sao Vincente that day, but since acquiring a vehicle we‘ve returned many times, and have enjoyed our trips to Sagres immensely.

If bus is your only option, go to Lagos bus station, buy a ticket from the ticket office inside, then catch Bus 47 to Sagres where you’ll be dropped at the Tourist Office. The cost is from €6 to €11 approximately and takes approximately 35 minutes. For timetable information, go to http://www.algarvebus.info/012.htm – From the Tourist Office in Sagres, you’ll also be able to take the 47 bus to Cabo de Sao Vincente. Takes 10 minutes and prices vary. You’ll have 30 minutes approximately to walk up to the lighthouse and explore the area before the bus returns to Sagres.

Recommended Itinerary For Your Day Trip to Sagres by Car

Get the most out of your day trip to Sagres, and go by car! If your’re in a motorhome or larger vehicle, you can find suitable parking at the Fort.

Here’s a suggested itinerary;

Visit the Fishing Harbor (Porto da Pesca da Baleeira)
Beaches – Praia da Mareta
Lunch
Fortaleza
Praia do Beliche
Cabo de Sao Vincente
Watch the Sunset at the most southwest point in Europe

Morning

Porto da Pesca da Baleeira (Fishing Harbor)

Visit the Fishing Harbor (Porto da Pesca da Baleeira): Start your day early at the fishing harbor to catch the lively atmosphere as local fishermen prepare for their day at sea. It’s a great opportunity to see traditional fishing boats, fisherman repairing nets, and just taking in the harbor views.

Late Morning

Praia da Mareta (Mareta Beach)

Beaches – Praia da Mareta: Head to Praia da Mareta for some relaxing beach time. This beach is sheltered and ideal for swimming or just soaking up the sun. The water here is typically calmer than at the more exposed western beaches, making it perfect for a leisurely morning.

Lunch

Enjoy lunch at one of the local seafood restaurants. Sagres is known for its fresh fish and seafood, so it’s a great chance to try dishes like grilled sardines or cataplana (a seafood stew). You can find several eateries with sea views.. One restaurant I like a lot is Restaurante Estrela do Mar (Starfish Restaurant) – it’s in the main street, they have a nice seafood selection and the food is always first rate.

Early Afternoon

Fortaleza de Sagres (Fortress of Sagres)

After lunch, visit the Fortaleza de Sagres. This historic site offers not only a rich history dating back to the Age of Discoveries (15th and 16th centuries) but also stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean. Explore the fortress grounds, the chapel, and the iconic compass rose. There’s a large car park here suitable for motor homes as well.

Late Afternoon

Praia do Beliche (Beliche Beach) from one of the caves along the beach

Next, head west and make your way to Praia do Beliche, a favorite among surfers due to its impressive waves and beautiful cliffs. Even if you’re not into surfing, the beach’s dramatic scenery makes it worth a visit. This is my favorite beach in west Algarve. It’s not too busy, and the sand is perfect.

Evening

Cabo de Sao Vincente (Cape St. Vincent)

Proceed to Cabo de Sao Vincente towards the late afternoon. This is the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe and is steeped in legends and maritime history. The lighthouse is closed, but you can walk along the cliff tops and admire the stunning views. There are food and clothing vendors here as well.

Sunset

Sunset at Cabo de Sao Vincente (Cape St. Vincent)

Watch the sunset at the most southwest point in Europe: The sunsets here are legendary, with the sun sinking directly into the ocean. It’s a breathtaking sight and a perfect way to conclude your day in Sagres.
